Interview Q&A
How long have you been in business?
Colorado Honor Band Association was founded in 1953. Our instrumental ensembles have established a reputation for excellence over the past 63 years in the Denver Metropolitan area.
What is your primary product or service?
Colorado Honor Band is an educational band program for students ages 9-13, ranging from new beginners to students playing college level music. Over 200 students participate year-round in our weekly program as well as our yearly summer camp. Each semester concludes with a concert where all bands (four different levels) have a chance to perform. Over the past 63 years, our ensembles have performed at International Music Festivals, World's Fairs, the Colorado Music Educators Association Convention and numerous concerts and parades in the Denver Metro area.
How did you first become interested in your line of business? (if owner) - What is your background? (If owner or store manager)
CHBA was founded by Bill Thompson, a public school teacher and musician. Our current Program Director, Susan Smith, is the daughter of Bill, and a music educator herself. All of the directors and staff are professional musicians and teachers in the Denver area.
How do you differentiate yourself from other businesses in your category and area?
Many high level arts programs in Denver are geared towards performance, with little to no emphasis on education. Colorado Honor Band focuses primarily on education, providing a fluid curriculum that takes the student from beginner to advanced musician. Our program provides significant one-on-one instruction and music theory education in our weekly workshops. Music is a vital means by which to reach a universal goal: to enrich one's life.
How many locations do you have and do you have plans to expand?
Colorado Honor Band currently operates in 7 different locations throughout the Denver-metro area. Colorado Honor Band will expand as a need or interest arises from communities and schools to expand or enhance their existing music program.
